We all still remember Alicia Silverstone as the bubbly teenager from Clueless. But the actress has also become a  passionate vegan activist and author of a new book The Kind Diet promoting a dairy and meat free diet as way to feel better, lose weight and help the environment. I was invited to create a signature cocktail for her autumn book-signing and dinner at Isabel's Cantina in Pacific Beach.

I wanted to create a cocktail that was in the spirit of the book and still delicious. I paired organic pomegranate/blueberry/acai juice loaded with antioxidants with Rain Organic Vodka. The sparkle came from Mionetto Prosecco made from organically grown grapes. And multicolored edible flowers from San Diego Specialty Produce added just the right hippie girl touch.

Alicia loved her special cocktail as much as I loved making it.

Hall & Oates have been one of my favorite musical duos ever since I knew how to operate a radio; I love their songs from Sara Smile to She's Gone to Maneater.

So I was thrilled when Steve and Lisa Altman invited me to create a signature cocktail for the Rock the Cure juvenile diabetes benefit at their La Jolla home featuring a private performance by Hall & Oates.

With the "Rich Girl" theme in mind, I started with a sophisticated combination of Grand Marnier, Navan natural vanilla Cognac and brut sparkling wine with an orange zest garnish from my book The Bubbly Bar. I made it even more bubbly and luxurious by adding a 24 K edible gold leaf element to the drink.

Even though John Oates begged off on tasting the Rich Girl cocktail before the concert, he definitely got a kick out of the name. And it was fun to see the guests including former Top Chef Brian Malarkey and San Diego Chargers football players coming back for more.

Janye and Rich met playing softball every weekend in San Diego; their romance slowly blossomed on dinners and outings to San Diego Padres baseball games. For their spring wedding, they chose a hotel overlooking the water, a beach theme and a bright peachy pink shade as the accent color. Janye wanted a sparkling cocktail to match the decor.

Since the couple loved softball and baseball, I decided to name their custom drink The Home Run. To create the right shade and underscore the romantic theme, I blended raspberry, passion fruit liqueur and sparkling wine. Janye says people are still asking her for the recipe to the Home Run months after the wedding.

Preston Bailey, one of the world's most famous floral and event designers known for his colorful and exuberant designs, came to La Jolla for a Village Garden Club benefit in early spring. His signature cocktail needed to include a floral element, it had to be unique since he's a world traveller and I wanted it to be pink since it's one of his favorite colors. I created a drink called Perfect Beauty with fresh California strawberry juice, Rose Geranium Syrup from my book The Bubbly Bar and an edible flower petal garnish. We mixed the cocktails with a variety of champagnes including Roeder Cristal, Dom Perignon, Bollinger and Perrier Jouet Fleur de Champagne. When Bailey tasted a non-alcoholic cocktail made with sparkling water he declared it: "Delicious, delicious, delicious!"

New Year's Eve Champagne Cocktails for the U.S. Grant

The Grant Grill, the signature restaurant at The U.S. Grant Hotel, wanted to create a unique New Year's Eve dinner with courses paired with various champagnes and champagne cocktails. The drinks needed to be festive and complement the flavors of the dish in the course they were paired with.

Since the chefs planned a chocolate dessert trio including bittersweet and milk chocolate, I decided to create a champagne cocktail called Grant's Gold that featured ginger root liqueur called Domaine de Canton and Cognac. For a luxurious note, I garnished the drink with candied ginger and edible 23-karat gold leaf.

Chantal and Ryan met on the dance floor at a trendy lounge in Chelsea; soon they were having a long distance romance since he lived in San Diego and she lived in New York City. Chantal eventually moved to San Diego and Ryan proposed. They knew they would honeymoon in the islands, both have exotic tastes and Chantal's family is originally from the Caribbean.

For their summer wedding in Washinton, DC, I created a simple drink using lush ripe mango spiked with a subtle taste of ginger beer to capture the flavor of the islands. The couple added cava and called the drink The Mango Ginger Gent; not to be left out, Chantal's wedding champagne cocktail was the Lavender Lady.

When Jo Malone London launched the new Wild Bluebell fragrance in the San Francisco Bay Area, I was hired as a consulting mixologist to demonstrate how the art of fragrance combining is similar to the way a cocktail is created. Taking the project a step further, I created syrups that matched the middle and top notes of Wild Bluebell and used them in an interactive exercise for guests. My client Annie who works in Hollywood wanted a unique wedding cocktail for her best friend. I created a cocktail I called Lover's Lane that was inspired by her friends' tastes and the fact that they met at an auto show. Anne was concerned that the drink be really tailored to her friends. Here's what she said about the drink I created: "Thanks to The Bubbly Girl, my best friend had the most amazing custom cocktail at her wedding! Maria Hunt created a lovely combination of whiskey (the groom's favorite), champagne (the bride's favorite), and pineapple juice and lavender (both of their favorites) which turned into a refreshing beverage enjoyed by all. She worked in a very interactive way to make sure it was something that both the bride and groom would enjoy, utilizing their favorite alcohols and scents, as well as the original story of how they met to name the drink, creating a guaranteed crowd pleaser!
