Thanks to @inglenook1879 and senior assistant wine Thanks to @inglenook1879 and senior assistant winemaker Jonathan Tyre for hosting a hot-but-magical Saturday hike - hours after finishing the 2024 harvest!🍇 The Rutherford winery was founded by sea captain Gustav Niebaum in 1879. We peeked into the ancient cellar where the first wines were made. Director Francis Ford Coppola purchased the back of the property in 1975, the chateau in 1995 and the Inglenook name in 2011. They’ve been organic for 30 years and the land is wild and unspoiled with persimmon, oak, fig, Japanese maple trees, an olive grove and two creeks flowing into the Napa river. After a shaded uphill hike, we arrived at a tranquil Japanese inspired garden with a pond. A great blue heron gracefully took to the air just as we approached the gorgeous table dressed in flowers and emerald floral napkins. The Blancaneaux Rhône white blend of Marsanne, Roussanne + Viognier made the perfect wine for pairing with all the flavors in our luncheon. And now, this wine it will always remind me of a magical day at this historic winery. My mom went through a country music phase, so one My mom went through a country music phase, so one of my first big concerts was seeing Charlie Pride and a bunch of other Grand Ole Opry stars when they stopped in Chicago. But that didn’t compare to the wonder of my first @billpickettrodeo in Castro Valley. Seeing people who looked like me in cowboy hats, fringe, boots and braids was like getting dropped off in a western Wakanda - a whole new facet of Black life that had been almost invisible. My research taught me Black equestrians had existed for generations going back to the Tuareg of North Africa. We settled the west, we sang and roped and rode on ranches, cattle drives, rodeos and movie sets. But I started seeing more Black cowgirls and boys, in fashion, music, books and movies. A cultural shift was coming. Flowers bring me so much joy, so I decided to star Flowers bring me so much joy, so I decided to start sharing them every Friday. One of the best times I’ve had at a winery was a flower arranging workshop at @flowerswinery with @chloeberlinstudio the winery’s first artist in residence. We all showed up and sat in front of a vase that spoke to us. Then we chose 9 stems to make an arrangement. We arranged the 9 stems, and then Chloe had us take the bouquet apart and make a new configuration. Sips of bright and balanced Fort Ross Seaview Pinot Noir helped ease the trauma🍷 She finds the exercise a meditation that gets us to slow down, enjoy working with living things and be more fluid in the way we approach creativity. As the week wore on, my arrangement felt alive as it evolved: pink jasmine opened, the green bells of Ireland grew taller and the lavender scabiosa and mini clematis blooms opened.
